RASPUTIN Update 3 – The One Where Most of the Running Happens

Distance ran in this update: 38.58 km Total Distance: 55.91 km

Winter has come.

But RASPUTIN continues. In order to spite winter I initially tried to keep wearing shorts, but as you might expect, that didn’t turn out well, so now I’m running in pants. I’ve done 7 runs since last time to bring the total up to 11. Run 5 was boring so I’m not going to talk about it.

This run is completely void of interest

On Run 6 I ran around the Music/Law faculties and the north part of Victoria College. This is a part of the university that I almost never visit, as I don’t aspire to be a lawyer, (professional) musician, or resident of the north part of Victoria College.

When I was there, the field in the top right had a bunch of kids in it for some daycare program. This is one of the only two places I have seen kids on campus, the other place is the soccer field that you can barely see cut off in the bottom left of the picture. Sadly, they haven’t been there ever since winter came (see above). You would think that crossing the street would be annoying, but it actually isn’t that bad, even at Queen’s Park, the third busiest street here. The light usually changes pretty quickly and if there are no cars on the road, which often happens, you can just run across. This is in stark contrast to the streets in Mississauga, where the road is twice as wide, the cars drive twice as fast and the traffic lights take ten billion times as long to turn green. Run 7 was at St. Michael’s College on November 30.

This place has a lot of criss-crossing paths. There are also some very long sidewalks leading up to houses that people actually live in; running up to the front door of those places with people walking around me was very awkward. One interesting place I found on this day is this short walkway on the west side of Victoria. If you don’t look at the massive building on the left you can almost believe that you’re next to a forest.

Run 8 took me into the heart of Victoria College.

I got into a good flow running here, I hardly had to do any backtracking. I also returned to St. Mike’s for a bit to run around the church on the right. The only indication that it’s affiliated with St. Mike’s is a sign facing Bay St, which is a little strange. The next day I went on Run 9.

This one looks much longer than 8, but it’s actually only 330m longer. In the previous runs, the red line is tangled up like DNA inside a cell, and they’re actually much longer than they look. If you laid out the length of each of the first 11 runs in a straight line, they would wrap around the Earth not once, not twice, but 0.0014 times.

You might think this was a picture taken in some village if you didn’t know it was UofT

Run 10 was the longest so far according to Google Earth, coming in at 11.2 km. This run covered the whole bottom left corner of the campus.

Inside New College
An art exhibit in the Architecture Building. It just cuts between 4 different shots of the artist staring at a city on what appears to be Mars. I have no idea what this means.

I decided to wear my thin gloves for this run, which was a mistake. About every 2.5 km I had to go in a builing to warm up. On the upside that meant that I found that art exhibit and this statue of Newton that was in one of the two lab buildings.

I shall end this update just as it started, with a completely boring run. If this run were ice cream, it would be vanilla.

Here is one last selfie and a picture of what the overall progress looks like. I really like how you can tell where all the runs start and stop from the picture.
